Turbomachinery Industrial Application - Lecture One – 3D Wind Turbine Analysis

Free preview

This lecture introduces the complete process of 3D wind turbine aerodynamic analysis using CFD. Students will learn how to prepare the turbine geometry, create the surrounding fluid domain, generate a high-quality mesh, and define realistic wind conditions. The analysis focuses on airflow around the blades, pressure and velocity distribution, lift and drag forces, torque, power generation, wake development, and overall turbine performance. Students will also explore rotating-domain techniques such as MRF and transient rotating simulations, evaluate key performance parameters including power coefficient (Cp) and tip speed ratio (TSR), and validate the numerical results to ensure accurate and reliable wind turbine design predictions.
